Terms of Use

Siamang Cloud and Siamang Studio are operated by Siamang Labs LLC, a Wyoming limited liability company, the team behind the source-available siamang research-as-code engine.

Both products are currently offered as beta hosted services. These Terms of Use (the Terms) govern your access to and use of the Siamang Cloud and Siamang Studio websites, consoles, hosted infrastructure, survey hosting and related services (collectively, the Services, and each a Service).

By creating an account or using a Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Services.

1. What the Services are

Siamang Labs offers three things built on one engine.

The `siamang` engine

The engine is a Python library for defining questionnaires, running surveys and analysing responses. It is source-available under the licence terms published with the engine, which currently include PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 (free for non-commercial use) and a separate commercial licence. These Terms govern the hosted Services and do not replace the engine licence that applies when you use the engine on your own.

Siamang Cloud

Siamang Cloud is a hosted platform for people who write their surveys as code. The Service may allow you to:

write questionnaires, analysis scripts and project configuration in a Git repository;
validate and preview projects;
deploy live surveys and collect responses;
run analysis in a sandboxed environment;
generate or export datasets, reports and other outputs;
collaborate with teammates in organizations;
move data into or out of the Service through supported connectors.

Siamang Studio

Siamang Studio is a hosted platform for people who build surveys without writing code. Every document you create in Studio is stored as a data document and compiled by the engine into Python, which you can download at any time. The Service may allow you to:

build questionnaires in a visual editor, with logic, quotas, randomization, a codebook and a theme;
deploy surveys to a hosted survey address and collect responses, including from a panel provider you contract with;
invite respondents by email from a contact list you upload, and remind those who have not answered;
design analysis as a visual flow of nodes, run it on your data and produce reports;
publish live dashboards of aggregated results and share them by link;
keep every Save as a version, compare versions and restore an earlier one;
download the generated Python code, a research bundle with provenance, a Methods draft and a citation file;
deposit a research bundle in a repository such as Zenodo or OSF using your own credentials;
import questionnaires from other tools and from Python written for the engine;
collaborate with teammates in organizations.

Features may differ by product, deployment, account type, plan or stage of the beta.

Code you download

Code that the Services generate for you (questionnaires, analysis scripts, research bundles) runs on the siamang engine and is subject to the engine licence. A paid Siamang Studio or Siamang Cloud plan includes a commercial licence of the engine for running the code generated from your projects, as described on the pricing page and in the plan terms. On a free plan, the engine licence’s non-commercial terms apply to the code you download. Your own content inside that code (question texts, codebooks, analysis definitions) remains yours as described in section 4.

2. Eligibility and accounts

You must be at least 16 years old to hold an account. If the law where you live requires a higher age to enter into these Terms, you may use the Services only if the additional legal requirements are satisfied.

You may sign in with an email address and password or through a third-party identity provider such as Google or Microsoft. Your use of an identity provider is subject to that provider’s terms.

You agree to:

provide reasonably accurate account information;
keep your credentials secure;
promptly update information that becomes materially inaccurate;
take reasonable steps to prevent unauthorized access to your account;
notify us if you become aware of unauthorized use of your account.

You are responsible for activity carried out through your account unless applicable law provides otherwise.

Organizations

Organizations may have owners, administrators and members with different permissions. Organization owners and administrators are responsible for managing access, memberships and settings within their organization.

If you join an organization controlled by another person or entity, that organization may be able to access, manage, export or delete content associated with organization projects according to the permissions available in the Service.

3. Acceptable use

You may not use, or attempt to use, a Service to:

violate applicable law or another person’s rights, including privacy, confidentiality or intellectual-property rights;
collect or process personal data without an appropriate lawful basis, notice, consent or other authorization required by applicable law;
impersonate another person or materially misrepresent the identity or source of a survey;
operate deceptive, fraudulent, harassing, abusive or unlawful surveys;
collect data from children or minors without any authorization or protection required by law;
upload, distribute or execute malware or malicious code;
escape, bypass or interfere with the analysis sandbox or other isolation mechanisms;
attack, disrupt, overload or materially degrade a Service or infrastructure used to provide it;
probe or test the security of a Service without our prior authorization;
circumvent rate limits, quotas, access restrictions, plan limits or technical controls;
gain unauthorized access to another account, project, organization or system;
create accounts or traffic through automated means for abusive purposes;
resell or provide a Service to third parties in a manner that materially circumvents limits or commercial terms applicable to your account.

We may apply reasonable technical controls, rate limits, quotas, storage limits, execution limits and other restrictions to protect the security, stability and availability of the Services.

Email invitations to respondents

Siamang Studio can send survey invitations and reminders by email to contacts you upload. Those emails leave from a sending domain that all customers share, so one misused list harms every customer’s deliverability. When you use this feature:

you may only upload people who have agreed to be contacted about your research, or with whom you or your organization have an existing relationship that makes such contact lawful and expected; purchased, scraped or harvested lists are not allowed;
you confirm this when you import a list, and we record that confirmation;
every email carries an unsubscribe link and a one-click unsubscribe header, and you may not remove, disable or override them;
an address that unsubscribes, bounces permanently or reports the email as spam is suppressed and will not be emailed again from that project;
we automatically pause a mailing, and all mailings of an organization, when its bounce or complaint rate crosses the thresholds published in the Service, and we may keep them paused until we have reviewed the list with you;
invitation volumes are limited per day and per month by plan, and the first mailing of a new organization is limited in size;
invitations are available on paid plans only, not during a trial.

Custom JavaScript in surveys

Siamang Studio lets paid plans add custom JavaScript to a survey. That code runs in respondents’ browsers under your responsibility. You may not use it to track respondents beyond the survey, to fingerprint devices, to load third-party trackers without a lawful basis and notice, to send data to places your privacy notice does not disclose, or to interfere with the survey runtime, the unsubscribe mechanism or our infrastructure.

Public live dashboards

A live dashboard share link can be opened by anyone who has it, without signing in. You are responsible for what the dashboard shows and for whom you give the link to, and for revoking it when it should no longer be public.

4. Your content and survey data

Ownership

As between you and Siamang Labs LLC, you retain your rights in questionnaires, analysis flows, scripts, configuration, files, contact lists, datasets, survey responses, reports and other content that you submit to or create through the Services (Your Content). These Terms do not transfer ownership of Your Content to us.

Licence needed to operate the Services

You grant Siamang Labs LLC a limited, non-exclusive licence to host, store, reproduce, transmit, process, execute, compile, modify where technically necessary, and display Your Content solely as reasonably necessary to operate, secure, maintain and improve the functionality of the Services for you, including validation, code generation, preview, deployment, response collection, email delivery, analysis, live dashboards, collaboration, backup and export.

This licence ends when Your Content is deleted from active systems, subject to reasonable technical retention in backups, logs and disaster-recovery systems and to any retention required by law.

No training on your project content

We do not use your questionnaires, flows, scripts, contact lists, survey responses, or other project content to train general-purpose machine-learning models. This restriction does not prevent us from using aggregate or de-identified Service-level information to operate, secure, measure or improve the Services, as described in the Privacy Policy.

Your responsibilities as survey operator

You decide what information a survey collects, from whom it is collected and how it is used. You are responsible for:

the legality and appropriateness of your survey;
having a lawful basis for collecting and processing personal data, including for the contacts you invite by email;
giving respondents any privacy notice required by law;
obtaining consent or authorization where required;
avoiding unnecessary collection of sensitive information;
responding to lawful requests from respondents, including requests to delete their answers;
your agreements with any panel provider that supplies respondents to your survey;
complying with laws that apply to your research, organization or jurisdiction.

For purposes of the GDPR, UK GDPR and similar laws, you generally act as controller of respondent data and Siamang Labs LLC acts as your processor when processing that data to provide the Services. See the Privacy Policy.

Deposits in external repositories

When you deposit a research bundle in Zenodo, OSF or a similar repository from the Service, the deposit is made in your name, with your credentials and on your instruction. A published deposit and its DOI are governed by that repository’s rules and are generally permanent; we cannot recall or delete them for you.

5. Feedback

If you voluntarily send us suggestions, ideas or feedback about a Service, you allow us to use that feedback to develop and improve the Services without restriction or obligation to compensate you. This does not give us ownership of Your Content or confidential information that you submit as part of your projects.

6. Beta status, availability and changes

The Services are currently in beta. Beta software may contain errors, incomplete functionality or breaking changes.

Unless we expressly agree otherwise in writing:

there is no service-level agreement or guaranteed uptime;
features may be added, modified, limited, suspended or removed;
storage, execution, email and usage limits may change;
a Service may be unavailable during maintenance or unexpected outages;
support is provided on a reasonable-efforts basis only.

If we discontinue a Service entirely, we will make reasonable efforts to provide notice and an opportunity to export Your Content where feasible.

7. Plans, trials and payment

The Services are paid, priced per organization, with a free plan that has limits on the number of projects, members and responses per project. Current plans, limits and prices are shown on the pricing page and in each Service.

Trials

New accounts currently receive 30 days of complimentary access to the Pro plan of the Service they sign up for. The complimentary period does not change the beta status of the Service and does not create a right to continued free access. Some features that depend on shared infrastructure, such as email invitations in Siamang Studio, are not available during the trial and unlock with the first payment.

When a trial ends without a paid plan, the organization is placed in a read-only state: you can still sign in, view and export Your Content, but cannot deploy surveys, collect responses or run analysis until a plan is chosen. Surveys that were collecting responses are paused. Data is kept as described in the Privacy Policy.

Subscriptions

Paid plans are billed monthly through our payment provider. If you subscribe during a trial, billing starts when the trial ends. Any pricing, billing, tax, renewal, cancellation or refund terms presented when you subscribe form part of your agreement with us.

Year offers

From time to time we may offer twelve months of a plan for a single payment (for example a beta launch offer). Such an offer:

grants the plan for the stated term, counted from the end of any running trial;
is a one-time payment, not a subscription, and does not renew automatically;
ends by returning the organization to the free plan unless you choose a plan before the term ends;
is available only until the deadline shown with the offer;
is subject to the refund terms presented at checkout.

Free plan limits

On the free plan a survey stops accepting responses when the project’s response limit is reached. Responses already collected are kept and remain exportable; nothing is deleted or charged automatically. Upgrading lifts the limit immediately.

Changes to prices

We may change plan features or prices from time to time. Any price change affecting an existing paid subscription will apply prospectively and with any notice required by applicable law or the billing terms presented to you.

8. Third-party services, connectors and providers

The Services may interact with third-party products, infrastructure or connectors, including identity providers you sign in with, connectors you configure, panel providers that supply respondents, and repositories you deposit into. Your use of a third-party service may also be governed by that provider’s own terms and privacy policy.

We are not responsible for third-party services that you choose to connect to a Service, except to the extent applicable law provides otherwise.

Siamang Studio includes an optional AI assistant, which is off unless an organization owner enables it. Enabling it sends questionnaire and analysis text to a third-party model provider, currently DeepSeek, and you accept that provider’s own terms of use and privacy policy for the content your organization sends through it. The Privacy Policy sets out exactly what is sent and what never is. You are responsible for not putting material into a questionnaire or an analysis that you are not permitted to disclose to that provider.

The assistant’s output is advisory. It suggests wording and points out possible problems; it does not decide anything, and you remain responsible for the questionnaires you publish and the analyses you rely on.

9. Security and backups

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures intended to protect the Services. However, no online system can be guaranteed to be perfectly secure or uninterrupted.

You are responsible for keeping appropriate independent copies of important data and for protecting credentials, API keys, SSH keys, project secrets, share links and organization access.

If you become aware of a security vulnerability affecting a Service, please report it to us rather than exploiting it or publicly disclosing details that would create an unreasonable risk to users.

10. Disclaimer of warranties

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the Services are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied or statutory, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title and non-infringement.

We do not warrant that a Service will be uninterrupted, error-free or completely secure, or that analyses, generated code, generated outputs, simulated data, statistical results, Methods drafts or other outputs will be accurate, complete or suitable for your purposes.

You remain responsible for reviewing outputs and determining whether they are appropriate for your research, business, compliance or other use.

Nothing in these Terms excludes warranties or rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.

11. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Siamang Labs LLC and its officers, members, employees and contributors will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or for loss of profits, revenue, goodwill, business opportunity or data, arising out of or relating to your use of or inability to use the Services.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, our aggregate liability for claims arising out of or relating to the Services will not exceed the greater of:

the amount you paid to Siamang Labs LLC for the Services during the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim; or
US$100.

The limitations in this section do not apply to liability that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded.

12. Suspension and termination

You may stop using the Services at any time and may delete your account using the available account controls.

We may suspend or terminate access, or pause a specific feature such as email invitations, where reasonably necessary because:

you materially or repeatedly violate these Terms;
your use creates a security, legal, deliverability or operational risk;
your use harms other users or a Service;
payment is due under an applicable paid plan and remains unpaid after any required notice;
we are required to do so by law.

Where reasonably practical, we will provide notice before suspension or termination, particularly when the issue can be corrected.

After termination, your right to use the Services ends. Where feasible and legally permissible, we will provide a reasonable opportunity to export Your Content before deletion. Data will then be handled according to the Privacy Policy.

Sections that by their nature should survive termination, including ownership, disclaimers, limitations of liability and governing-law provisions, will continue to apply.

13. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms as the Services evolve.

For material changes, we will take reasonable steps to notify users through the Services, email or another appropriate channel before the changes take effect where required by law.

Your continued use of a Service after updated Terms take effect constitutes acceptance of those Terms to the extent permitted by applicable law. If you do not agree to an update, you may stop using the Services and export or delete Your Content.

14. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, USA, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles.

Subject to any mandatory rights or venue rules that apply where you live, disputes arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Services will be subject to the state or federal courts having jurisdiction in Wyoming.

Nothing in this section removes consumer, privacy or other statutory rights that applicable law does not allow you to waive.

15. General terms

If any provision of these Terms is held unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in effect to the extent permitted by law.

Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of our right to enforce it later.

You may not assign these Terms in a way that would transfer your obligations without our consent where consent is legally required. Siamang Labs LLC may assign these Terms as part of a merger, reorganization, sale of assets or similar corporate transaction, subject to applicable law.

These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and any additional terms expressly incorporated into them, form the agreement governing your use of the Services.
